Skin & Nail
Skin and nail health is about more than maintaining a good look—especially when it comes to your feet!
The feet are on the “front lines” when it comes to interacting with the world. Every step we take, our feet are the first to touch down; and even when they’re not bare, we usually have them stuffed in shoes.
The environments our feet are in are not always the best, and that can sometimes lead to problems. From unwelcome invaders to dryness, cracking, and friction, conditions can be unsightly, uncomfortable, and even lead to worse troubles if left unchecked.
At Michigan Foot & Ankle Specialists, we specialize in treating many common skin and nail conditions of the feet. This includes direct and preventative care for diabetic patients as well, for whom any problem with skin and nails can be a serious break in their defenses.
Here are some of the common skin and nail conditions we treat.
Corns & Calluses
When friction is aggravating your foot, the skin will naturally develop a corn or callus in an effort to defend itself.
What is the difference between the two? A corn tends to be more raised and in places where weight is not so heavy on the foot, such as on the sides of the toes. A callus tends to be flatter and more spread out—usually along the bottom of the heel or forefoot.
If you have consistent corns or calluses, it means you have a friction problem. Changes in footwear may help, but you might also have a structural abnormality in your foot that is placing too much friction in one area. We can help offload this excess pressure with custom orthotics and other treatments.
Plantar Warts
Warts are caused by a viral infection. The ones that commonly lead to bumpy, rough lesions on the bottom of the feet are the result of the human papillomavirus, or HPV.
The good news is that plantar warts do not tend to be that harmful on their own, although they can develop in places that can become painful to walk on.
Plantar warts will eventually die off on their own, but it can take a year or more for this to happen! If your warts are causing you trouble or you simply want them gone, your best option is to come see us for treatment.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail will befall just about everyone at some point. The nail grows into the flesh, causing temporary pain and tenderness.
Most cases are treatable at home, but there are times you will want to see a professional about them. This includes:
- When the ingrown toenail is too painful to manage on your own.
- When you see signs of infection.
- When you are getting frequent cases of ingrown toenails.
We can help you deal with ingrown toenails when needed, and help prevent persistent cases from coming back again and again.
Fungal Toenails
A fungal toenail infection can be a very stubborn situation, causing brittle, thick, discolored nails that are not a pleasure to see.
The sooner a suspected infection is identified and treated, the easier it tends to be resolved. It can still take some time for a case to fully clear up and new nail to grow in to replace that which was ruined by the fungus. So, if you have something in the future you would like clear toenails for, do not wait to see us about treatment!
